PLANT SEMIOCHEMICALS as a TOOL TO MANAGE HERBIVORES AND NATURAL ENEMIES IN DIFFERENT CROPS IN BRAZIL.

One of the great challenges to the Neotropical Agriculture is to develop new technologies to pest control aiming reduce the indiscriminate use of pesticides. Plant semiochemicals in nature (using companion plants) and/or synthetic formulations have a great potential to be applied in filed to manage pests and its natural enemies. In this study, different semiochemicals were evaluated to manage natural enemies and herbivores. Methyl salicylate (MeSa) and (E,E)-α-farnesene (EEFar) are able to attract and retain natural enemies in Y-olfactometer laboratory assays and EEFar alone or combined with MeSa also attracted higher number of parasitoids (Platygastridae) compared to parcels untreated in soybean areas. Volatiles from cotton plants combined with aggregation pheromone of Anthonomus grandis enhance the capture of boll weevil in field traps. HIPVs emitted from primed plants can optimize the action of natural enemies attracting them earlier compared to no primed maize plants. These results suggest that the use of semiochemicals to manage natural enemies and herbivores is feasible, it is necessary to develop new devices to take semiochemicals to field in a more elegant and safe manner to non-target species and to the environment: sentinel plants, instrumentation and/or nanotechnology could be developed to reach this objective.
