Among the most used products to prevent mosquitoes bites are the ones based on  DEET, picaridin and  oil of lemon eucalyptus (p-menthane-3,8-diol or PMD). DEET is being commercially used since 1957 and it is still considered one of the most effective repellent. Considering that PMD is derived from citronellal and exhibits a repellent efficiency much higher than citronellal, we carried out some chemical transformations in the citronellal structure to evaluate the repellency of the derivatives. One particular derivative displayed a much better efficiency as repellent than citronellal. The same chemical transformation was then effected in many other natural products described in the literature as having repellent activity. To most of the tested natural products, the prepared derivatives showed higher repellent activity, and for one of them the repellent activity increased from 50 minutes to more than six hours. The influence of unsaturation and stereochemistry on the repellent activity were evaluate. A combination of two natural products that was being tested as repellent showed potencial to be used as adulticide.
