In the course of their evolution, plants have developed a wide range of chemical defenses in order to protect themselves from herbivores. In response, phytophagous insects have evolved various strategies aiming to minimize the toxicity of harmful chemicals present in their diets. In this talk, we will discuss the main behavioral, molecular, and biochemical strategies employed by insect herbivores to counteract the effects of plant chemical defenses. Among these, we will focus on detoxification and sequestration mechanisms from insects towards plant secondary metabolites. We will also explore examples of well-described biological systems and discuss them from a biochemical and evolutionary perspective.
